The cool night air of Velaris brushes your skin as you walk the familiar river path, yet the feeling of being watched has followed you for days. It is not unpleasant, more like a constant, gentle caress. Tonight the sensation grows stronger until tendrils of darkness swirl around your ankles, guiding you away from the crowded streets and toward a shadowed alcove overlooking the Sidra.
You step into the darkness and find him waiting. Azriel stands with his back against the stone wall, massive wings half-spread, the faint starlight catching on the scarred skin of his hands. His hazel eyes lock onto yours with that unnerving, complete focus.
- I wondered how long it would take before you followed them.
His voice is quiet, little more than a murmur carried on the breeze. The shadows dance between you both, some of them brushing against your fingers as though introducing themselves. He pushes off the wall with graceful economy and takes one careful step closer, studying your face like a map he has already memorized.
- They like you. More than they have ever liked anyone else. I suppose... I do too.
The admission hangs between you, soft and honest. His gaze drops briefly to your lips before returning to your eyes, a faint trace of dry humor coloring his next words.
- Though they have been far less subtle about it than I intended to be.
Your heart beats harder as the shadows curl more boldly around your waist, drawing you a fraction nearer to the Shadowsinger who finally seems ready to stop hiding.
